Ideal habitat requirements and scale of human landscape tolerance is listed to help determine which boxes are most suitable for your yard.

Nuthatch or Chickadee bird box

Habitat: Woodland and/or open areas with access to several mature trees

Tolerance: Moderate to high tolerance of human landscapes

The Northern Flicker

Habitat: Open woodland, edge habitat, parks or yards with medium sized to mature trees

Tolerance: Moderate to high tolerance of human landscapes

The Bluebird

Habitat: Grasslands and pastures, edge habitat, open areas with sparse brush or saplings.

Tolerance: Moderately tolerant of human landscapes

The Barn Owl

Habitat: Expansive grassland, pasture and/or agriculture fields. Nests primarily in wooden barns or silos

*Not a common Northern IL species*

More commonly found in Central/Southern Illinois

Tolerance: Moderately tolerant. While this species often relies of human structures for nesting, the habitat requirements are specific.

Northern kestrel nest box

The Kestrel

Habitat– Agricultural landscape and prairie. Prefers open landscape with sparse tree and shrub habitat.

Tolerance– Moderate tolerance to human landscape. This species is often seen in agricultural areas.

The Tree Swallow

Habitat– Variable habitat, ideally near open water. Typically found near wetlands with adjacent prairie or open fields.

Tolerance– Slightly tolerant of human landscape. Prefers more natural landscape with open water and standing dead trees.

The House Wren

Habitat– Variable habitat. Woodlands, shrublands, suburban yards with access to dense shrub/trees.

Tolerance– Moderately high tolerance of human landscapes. Found often in suburban yards with available woody vegetation.

Bird feeder usable in all habitat types, across a gradient of urban, suburban, rural and natural landscapes.

The Bat Box

Habitat- Woodlands- dense forests, wetlands, savanna, open areas with mature trees.

Tolerance– Variable tolerance of human landscape (dependent on species). Can be found in farm fields, suburban/urban landscapes, parks, generally places with access to large mature trees.
